In order to produce a kilo of meat 15,500 litres water are needed, whereas the realization of a T-shirt "costs" 2,900 litres. We have decided to devote GECA's 2009 calendar to water, this lingering to ponder how this element enters our lives in every single moment, even without noticing it. Water is needed to produce the energy we use and to transport the goods we purchase. Water irrigates the fields where our vegetables and the hay for our animals grow. Water feeds the fountains which adorn our cities. With water we celebrate religious rites and get fot by swimming in a pool. The "blue gold"'s importance is however mostly felt in those areas where the right to drinkable water is neglected to about 1,5 billion people.
We would like to tell part of this story througth thirteen pictures by thirteen photographers coming from different countries of the world: South Africa, the USA, Chile, Japan, Australia, Turkey, Ireland, Spain, France and Italy.
Because water is doomed to become an even rare and more precious resource, whose management and safeguard involve the choices of governments and transnational organizations, but also the behaviour of us all. |
